DRDO successfully test fires Akash-1S surface to air defence missile

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday successfully test-fired the Akash-1S surface to air defence missile system.

This is the second successful test of the missile in the last two days. Earlier on Friday, DRDO successfully test-fired an indigenously-developed 500 kg class guided bomb from a Sukhoi combat jet at Pokhran in Rajasthan.

The 1S is the new version of the Akash missile which comes fitted with an indigenous seeker. It shares features with that of the ASTRA and QRSAM missiles.

Akash is a potent supersonic mobile multi-directional, multi-target point, area Air Defence system that can simultaneously engage multiple air targets using sophisticated multi-function phased array radars.
