Cyclone Gaja weakens into deep depression, claims 13 lives

Chennai: The Cyclone Gaja has weakened into a deep depression on Friday afternoon and is moving through interior Tamil Nadu towards Kerala.

Met Department said, it is gradually weakening into a depression and at present lays centred at 170 km east-northeast of Kodaikanal and 70 km northeast of Kochi.

Many places in south interior Tamil Nadu are expected to receive rain for the next twenty-four hours, the Met officials told.

Meanwhile, relief measures are being carried out on a war-footing in the affected places in Tamil Nadu.

Authorities have confirmed the death of thirteen people so far due to the cyclone that crossed the shores early this morning south of Nagapattinam.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the families of the deceased will be provided a solatium of Rs. 10 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF).

Those with severe injuries will be provided with Rs. one lakh each while people who had sustained simple injuries will get Rs. 25,000 as relief, he added.
