Cybercrime warns of fake investment scams on social media using deepfake videos, photos of PM, Union Minister

New Delhi: The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has warned people regarding the fake advertisements being published on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. It says that the scammers are using deep fake videos and edited pictures of Prime Minister, Union Ministers, famous business leaders, and celebrities to gain trust and fool the public.
The scamming investment advertisements can be display messages like “Double Your Money” or “Guaranteed Profits.” If you click on the links available on the ads you will be taken to fake websites or added to WhatsApp and Telegram groups.
As per reports, Scammers lure victims with small investments of Rs 500 to Rs 5,000, show fake profits to build trust, and then push for larger payments. Fraudsters then demand additional payments for taxes, processing fees, or KYC. Once the money is received, they disappear.
I4C has advised people to stay aware before investing anywhere that was displayed on social media and check if it is registered with SEBI or not. Do not share bank details, OTP, UPI PIN, or passwords with anyone.
If anyone gets scammed by such investments are immediately requested to dial 1930 and report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Officials say quick reporting improves chances of recovering lost funds.
How to identify fake advertisement:
- Claims of “100% Guaranteed Return”
- Promises to double or multiply money in a short time
- Pressure messages like “Invest Today”, “Limited Offer”, “Last Chance”
- Use of photos of PM, industrialists, actors or investment experts
- Requests to join WhatsApp or Telegram groups
- Investment advice without SEBI registration
- Pressure for immediate bank transfer or UPI payment

- Don’t decide based only on social media ads
- Don’t blindly trust celebrity endorsements
- Check all investment details on your own
- Be careful with investment tips on WhatsApp or Telegram
- Don’t click unknown or suspicious links
- Never share bank details, OTPs, UPI PINs or passwords with anyone
