Congress Pitches Ajay Rai Against PM Narendra Modi In Varanasi

Varanasi: Putting an end to all the speculations that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, the Congress party on Thursday fielded Ajay Rai from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh to take on PM Modi.

Rai had unsuccessfully contested against PM Modi in 2014 and finished third in the contest after the BJP leader and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Arvind Kejriwal.

In 2014, PM Modi won the Varanasi seat by a margin of over three lakh votes against AAP leader Kejriwal. While Modi got over 5.8 lakh votes, Rai managed about 75,000 votes.

Modi will file his nomination papers for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat on April 26 in the presence of leaders, including Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

Noteworthy, Varanasi Lok Sabha Constituency will go to the polls in the last phase of the general elections on May 19.
