Congress-DMK Enter Into Alliance For 2019 Elections

New Delhi: Ahead of the 2019 General Elections, the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on sealed a seat-sharing deal for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday. This comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) entered into a pact with the AIADMK in the state.

The seat-sharing announcement was made by DMK leader MK Stalin in presence of Congress leaders Mukul Wasnik and KC Venugopal. “Identifying the constituencies to be allotted to allies will be decided after discussions with our partners,” Stalin said.

As per reports, the Congress party will contest from nine of Tamil Nadu’s 39 seats and the lone Lok Sabha constituency in Puducherry.

Political experts have said that the DMK-Congress alliance will lead to polarisation of the Tamil Nadu election arena, with most parties aligning with either of the Dravidian parties. This will also single-out VK Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dhinakaran and actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan to fend on their own. The DMK-Congress alliance is also being supported by the two communist parties, the VCK, and the Indian Union Muslim League.

On the other hand, the AIADMK is supported by the PMK, which holds prominence in several northern districts of Tamil Nadu, and other smaller parties. The BJP which will contest from five seats in the southern state.
