Coast guard fight fire off Karnataka coast, 16 scientists & crew rescued

New Delhi: Two Indian Coast Guard ships on late Friday night doused a major fire on a ship having 16 scientists and 30 crew members on board off the Mangaluru coast in Karnataka.

The coast guard ships, named Sujay and Vikram, engaged in firefighting operations as soon as they reached the spot. After some time, the ships managed to put out the fire and escort the crew to safety.

Reportedly, the ships was a research vehicle ‘Sagar Sampada’ belonging to Shipping Corporation of India.

The origin of the fire is unknown yet and an investigation is underway.
