New Delhi: In its latest advisory, the Union Home Ministry has directed state governments to tally and collect the biometric data of the Rohingya migrants that have been living in India. The ministry also clarified that the Rohingyas are illegal migrants and not refugees and that there were reports suggesting their involvement in various crimes and illegal activities.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has confirmed in the Lok Sabha that the advisory has been sent to all the state governments.

Singh also said that a report will be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) once the enumeration procedure is over. The MEA would then take up the matter with the government of Myanmar. He further revealed that the Border Security Forces (BSF) and the Assam Rifles have also been directed not to allow any more migrants into the Indian territory.

According to reports, there are 40,000 Rohingyas in India which mainly reside in Jammu and Kashmir, Mewat (Haryana), Hyderabad and Tripura.

Countering the allegations of TMC MP Sugata Bose that the Central government has been hostile towards the Rohingya refugees for no reason, the Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has hailed that India has always been ‘soft’ towards the issue of illegal migrants. He further stated that the MEA has been helping various refugee camps in Bangladesh and also the Rakhine province of Myanmar but the government must take care of Indian citizens first before taking care of others.
