Campaigning for the 1st phase of Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh ends

Raipur:  The high voltage campaigning for the first phase of Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh ended this evening. The BJP as well as the Congress fielded their top leaders to woo the voters on the last day of campaigning.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, BJP chief Amit Shah held rallies and road-shows in different places today.

Gandhi , while addressing a rally in Kanker, promised all-loan waiver to poor farmers of Chhattisgarh within 10 days of forming the government if the Congress emerges victorious in the ensuing assembly polls.

He also said that the Congress Government would give Rs 2,500 to every farmer for harvesting his paddy crop.

The Congress President also touched upon the issue of unemployment and promised that after coming to power, his government will work day and night to set up food processing factories in every block in the state.

The BJP, which has won three consecutive elections in the state, released its election manifesto in the presence of Amit Shah here today.

The BJP Chief said that Chief Minister Raman Singh has been successful in containing Naxalism, adding that the BJP government has changed Chhattisgarh in the past 15 years.

“Chhattisgarh used to be a backward state… but the BJP has worked hard to change that… today the state is a power hub, cement hub, aluminium hub, medical hub, etc… the state is progressing. It is on the road to success,” he said.

18 constituencies in eight Naxal-affected districts will go to polls in this phase on Monday. A total of 190 candidates, including Chief Minister Raman Singh from Rajnandgaon, are contesting in this phase.

Polling to the remaining 72 constituencies, in the second and final phase, will be held on the 20th of this month. Counting of votes will be taken up on the 11th of next month.
