New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Tuesday projected the apex court’s decision as a moral victory for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a rather big blow for West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

The Supreme Court, earlier today, directed Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear before the CBI but decreed that no coercive action, including arrest, can be taken against him for now.

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister of Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad welcomed the order and said it’s a blow to the Mamata Banerjee government and a victory for the CBI. It also showed that nobody is above the law, including the police commissioner, he added.

Prasad also informed that Kumar will appear before the CBI in Shillong as the environment is not conducive in West Bengal.

‘Save the Constitution dharna

The Mamata Banerjee-led government in the state and BJP are at loggerheads after the CBI team tried to question Kolkata’s police commissioner in connection with chit fund scams. Banerjee has been on a ‘Save the Constitution’ dharna since Sunday night over the CBI’s attempts to interrogate the police chief allegedly without any warrant.
