BJP-led NDA announces Odisha’s Draupadi Murmu name as Presidential candidate

Bhubaneswar: BJP-led NDA announces Draupadi Murmu named as Presidential candidate for the upcoming elections today.

Speaking about Draupadi Murmu’s candidature, BJP chief JP Nadda said that preference has been given for the first time to a woman tribal candidate.

Draupadi Murmu was the ninth Governor of Jharkhand and was in office from May 18, 2015 to July 12, 2021. She is the first governor of Jharkhand to complete the five-year term since its formation in the year 2000.

The two-time member of the Odisha assembly, Murmu’s political career began in 1997, when she was elected as a councilor and then became the vice chairperson of Rairangpur notified area council. In the same year, she also became the vice president of BJP’s Odisha ST Morcha and later became its president.

In 2013, Murmu became the national executive member of the party’s ST Morcha. Murmu is also the recipient of the “Nilakantha Award” for the best MLA of the year in 2007 by the Odisha government. She has played an active role in the upliftment of the tribal community in Odisha during her political career.

Murmu started out as a teacher and then entered into Odisha politics. She became MLA twice on BJP ticket from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009).

Before she came to prominence, in her modest beginning, she was elected as the councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997.

After serving as vice-president of BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha, she was elected as a legislator from the Rairangpur constituency in 2000.

During the BJD and BJP coalition government in Odisha, she served as a minister in Commerce and Transport and subsequently Fisheries and Animal Resources department between 2000 and 2004.
