Guwahati: The prime accused of the sexual assault case of a minor girl in Dhing of Assam’s Nagaon district died after jumping into a pond while recreating the crime scene under police custody.
According to reports, the accused, identified as Tafujal Islam, was being taken to the crime location for recreation of the crime scene at around 4 am on Saturday morning, when he tried to escape from the police custody. After escaping from the cops, he jumped into the pond.
Following this, the cops initiated a search operation and his body was recovered nearly after two hours with the help of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
As per reports, the constable from whom he tried to pull the handcuff was also injured in the incident.
It is worth mentioning here that a 12-year old girl was sexually assaulted by three people while she was returning home from her tuition on Thursday evening.
The victim was spotted in a semi-conscious state near a pond by the locals. She was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital. The girl is presently recovering in hospital. Following the incident, the Tafujal Islam was arrested while two other accused are absconding.
After the incident came to the fore, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle and said, “The horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience.”
“We will NOT SPARE anyone and BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE. I’ve directed the Assam Police chief to visit the site and ensure swift action against such monsters,” he further tweeted.
Further investigation into the matter is underway. More detailed reports related to the incident are awaited.
