Assam flood death toll climbs to 66, over 6.5 lakh people still affected
With floodwaters slowly receding in some areas, thousands of people were still displaced, and relief and rescue operations are ongoing.
Assam: Four more people lost their lives to floods in Assam, the death toll so far reaching 66, as the water receded in parts of the state; the water began to recede.
Approximately 6.55 lakh people are still affected in nine districts of Assam; the latest bulletin has been released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), though the levels had started to recede in most places in Assam.
The worst affected district is Sivasagar with nearly 2.9 lakh people affected, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat.
Moreover, hundreds of villages remain water-locked, and large areas of land for cultivation are yet to be submerged, resulting into disrupting transport and agriculture for the affected people.
The State government agencies along with NDRF, SRDF and other rescuers are continuously taking on relief and rescue work.
Thousands of people affected and in a relief camp have been provided with food, water, and medical assistance.
However, the state remains on a state of alert, even if the situation improves, with a few rivers still overflowing their danger level at a few spots.
The citizens living in the danger areas are warned to keep a watch and listen to guidance from government agencies.
