Assam doctor infected with two variants of Covid-19 simultaneously
New Delhi: A female doctor from Assam has been infected by two different variants of Covid-19 simultaneously.
Reportedly, tests at Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Dibrugarh of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has shown that the woman has been infected by Alpha and Delta variants of coronavirus.
She got infected with both the variants at a time after a month of taking the second dose of Covid vaccine. She did not require hospitalization as she suffered from mild symptoms, added reports.
According to experts, the double infection could be due to the contraction of the virus from two persons infected with the two variants.
Reports also added that her husband was also infected with alpha variant of Covid-19.
“When we tested her samples in our laboratory, we found that she was infected by both Alpha and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 at the same time. Her husband was infected by the Alpha variant. The samples of the doctor were collected twice to ascertain and reconfirm the double infection. It is, hence, confirmed that she was infected by both variants at the same time,” said Biswajyoti Borkakoty, senior scientist at RMRC.
