Article 370 and 35(A) revoked: What would be the changes in Kashmir

New Delhi:  Today, on August 5, 2019 Article 370 of the Constitution has been removed. As a result, the special status to Jammu and Kashmir was withdrawn. In this context let us see what would be the changes in Jammu and Kashmir.

Article 370 provides Jammu and Kashmir its own constitution and decision-making rights for all matters except defence, communications, and foreign affairs. After the removal of the Article, the special status for Kashmir has been removed.

Now, centre can bring any new policy for Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, Article 370 made it necessary for the centre to get the state legislature’s approval for introducing any policies. Ladakh will be a Union Territory without a legislature and Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature.

Due to the special status, the state’s residents enjoyed a special status. They were governed with a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to other Indians. As per the provision of the special status Indian citizens from other states cannot purchase land or property in Jammu & Kashmir. However, after today’s move, this restriction will not be in force.

Jammu and Kashmir will cease to be a state. However, it became two union territories. Two Lieutenant Governors will be appointed.
