Jammu: A nomad family from Ramban, Jammu was in for a shock after a doctor at the hospital in Jammu informed them that their 12-year-old daughter was pregnant. Also, she had to then abort the 3-month foetus.

On further investigation, it was revealed that the minor nomad girl was allegedly raped by a “group of locals” in Ramsoo area of Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir. As per the reports, the girl was discharged after five days in the hospital.

Ramban is over 120 km from Jammu on the Srinagar highway. The victim’s village is 15 km from the town.

The girl’s relative told ‘The Kashmirwalla’ that the girl was gangraped about 3 months ago by a group of men from the same village. They had threatened her to keep quiet; else they would kill her and her family. Scared the teen kept quiet, but later she approached the men as she wasnot feeling well. This is when one of the men gave her some medicine which caused extreme bleeding.

This episode has created massive outrage in Ramsoo village, where the family lived. This incident is reminiscent of the infamous Kathua rape which took place in January 2018, where an eight-year-old Bakarwal girl was allegedly raped by the locals of the village.

‘The Kashmirwalla’ also reported that the girl’s family was the only Muslim family amongst around 20-30 Non-Muslim families.

A case has been filed by the victim’s mother at the Ramsoo police station on January 4. The police have arrested a local Sanju Singh, son of Gaja Singh of Vernal village in Ramsoo.

Locals are seeing such rape cases as an attempt to dislodge Muslims from the Jammu region. A local, on condition of anonymity said, “Rape is rape and we don’t want to put communal undertones to it. But for a long time, there has been an attempt to dislodge Muslims. Such rape cases make us anxious about our daughters and their future. First it was Kathua, and now it is this case. It is very scary. I cannot even imagine what she must have gone through.”

The girl’s parents are clueless as to the future of their child and as of now seek justice for their child. As per the reports, the victim belonged to a poor and uneducated nomad family.

J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti

Terming the case as “blood-curdling” and “disturbing”, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said some leaders would now come out in the defence of the rapists.

“What can be more blood curdling & disturbing than a case where a 13 year old minor girl was gangraped in Ramsoo & is now 3 months into her pregnancy. But instead of public outrage, questions will swirl about the caste and religion of this innocent child and her rapists (sic),” Mufti said in a series of tweets.

“Before we know it will assume communal understones & leaders who enjoy political patronage will be out on a limb to defend the rapists,” she added.
