3 Dead, Over 20 Missing After Maharashtra Dam Breach

Mumbai: At least three people were killed and 22 reported missing after a breach in Tiware dam in Ratnagiri of Maharashtra. The breach of the dam occurred around 10 pm on Tuesday after very heavy rains over the last two days.

Seven down-stream villages have been flooded and at least twelve houses near the dam have been washed away.

Two bodies were recovered in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said. They added that they feared the number of people missing could increase.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also been rushed to the spot. Officials of the civil administration and police and volunteers are involved in search and rescue operations at the site of Maharashtra dam breach.

Mumbai on Tuesday was left paralyzed after heavy rains lashed across the city and nearby areas. The financial capital was waterlogged and led to the cancellation of trains, diversion of flights.

23 people were killed and 79 injured in two separate wall collapse incidents in Mumbai and Pune. 14 persons died in the rest of Maharashtra in rain-related incidents in the last 24 hours, officials said.

Mumbai recorded its second-highest July rain over a 24-hour period on Tuesday in 44 years after July 26, 2005, floods that killed more than 1,000 people.
