Kolkata: Turmoil in Trinamool Congress deepened on Monday as 20 of its Lok Sabha MPs reportedly wrote to Speaker Om Birla, triggering speculation of a party split following its defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections.

Sources said the MPs flagged their position to the Speaker, with some expressing willingness to align with the NDA. Senior TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed around 20 MPs have informed Birla about supporting the National Democratic Alliance.

The letter comes amid a growing rebellion in the party. MP Sukhendu Roy resigned earlier today. On Monday, 14 rebel TMC MPs met West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari in Delhi. There is talk that the dissenting MPs may even float a separate party.
