Lucknow: In yet another shameful incident, two Kashmiri dry fruit sellers were mercilessly thrashed by a group of men belonging to a fringe outfit in Lucknow’s Daliganj area on Wednesday evening. One of the men had shared a video of the assault, which has gone viral on social media. The attack comes amid reports of Kashmiris facing harassment and social boycott in different parts of the country after the Pulwama terror attack last month.

The video shows two men in saffron kurtas thrashing the two vendors who were sitting on the road with their dry fruits spread out on a sheet. One of the attackers beat the men with a wooden stick. In one of the videos, one of the Kashmiri men is seen covering his head and pleading the attackers to stop beating him.

The men were intercepted by a few locals who told them not to take law in their own hands and to stop further assault on the two men.

Meanwhile, a case of rioting and breach of peace has been registered and one person who has been arrested by the Police. “This is a very unfortunate and one-off incident which has happened. We will crack down on such incidents with the entire force of the law. Nobody is above the law and nobody can target innocent citizens like this…. The strongest possible action will be taken to target innocent Kashmiris,” senior police officer Anand Kumar told NDTV.

Furthermore, several political parties including the Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress and AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi have condemned the incident. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter and wrote: “Dear PM @narendramodi Sahib, this is what you had spoken against & yet it continues unabated. This is the state governed by your handpicked Chief Minister. Can we expect action in this case or do we file your concern & assurances as a jumla, meant to placate but nothing more? (sic)”

PDP Chief and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also took to Twitter and condemned the attack on Kashmiris. She wrote- “Kashmiris are being hounded & punished. The culprits here were clad in saffron kurtas & are from the VHD. They have no fear & in fact uploaded the video on SM. Gols conspicuous silence is actually a political tactic to encourage such elements & communalise the atmosphere until polls.”
