Mumbai: As many as 15 people died and several others have been seriously injured as a four-storied unauthorized building collapsed onto adjacent vacant slum. The operation to remove rubble at the site is still underway after more than 20 hours.

Reports further said, rescue work is underway as a rear part of the four-storey building of Ramabai Apartment, located between Chamunda Nagar and Vijay Nagar on Narangi Road in Vasai, collapsed late at night on August 26.

The President of India Droupadi Murmu condoled the loss of lives and took to her X handle and wrote, “The collapse of a building in Virar, Maharashtra, resulting in the death of several people is extremely tragic.” She further added, “I express my condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this accident and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

On Virar building collapse, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said, “It is a matter of concern. Earlier, a notice was issued for a structural audit. Sometimes, even when you compel people, they don’t want to move from a place.”

“We have to act strictly, as the lives of people are important. We will conduct a probe and take action,” Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis informed.

On the rescue operation following building collapse, Sanjay Hirwade, Additional Commissioner of Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation, told ANI, “15 people have died. 9 people are injured and are being treated. Residents here say that 2 people are missing and rescue operations are on to find them
