1 killed, 9 trapped as avalanche hits Ladakh’s Khardung La Pass

Ladakh: One person has passed away and nine are missing after an avalanche buried an SUV at Khardung La pass in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh this morning.

According to reports, a Scorpio vehicle was hit by a giant wall of snow this morning.

A search and rescue operation by the district administration, police and the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) is underway, till the report was filed.

Earlier, 12 persons in a Scorpio and two tippers have left towards Khardung La to collect snow. As they were loading snow in the second tipper the snow broke loose and workers buried under it.

Khardung La pass, at 17,500 feet, is among the world’s highest motorable roads. It is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys in the state.

On Thursday, a warning was issued in nine districts of Kashmir for the avalanche-prone areas of Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh districts.
