Watch: Shah Rukh Khan’s lesson to Suhana, Aryan, says ‘children should know about the value of God’

Mumbai: One of the most celebrated Bollywood couples are Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan. The couple have been married for 33 years now. On Diwali, a video of Shahrukh Khan teaching his children about the importance of God has gone viral. Despite facing constant criticism for his interfaith marriage, the video clip reveals how he maintains a secular atmosphere at home. The video is from a 2004 documentary which captures the Diwali celebrations at Shah Rukh Khan’s home Mannat.

In the video, both Gauri and Shah Rukh can be seen teaching their children the value of God and each other’s culture. The clip also throws a glimpse of Mannat and some shots of Shah Rukh Khan talking with a priest to point out that his kids are going to perform the Diwali puja. He even goes on to narrate how he would discuss the Quran and what exactly he says in prayers as a member of the family demonstrate religious unification and secularism in them.

In the clip, Shah Rukh says, “children should know about the value of God, weather it’s a Hindu god or Muslim god. So, next to Ganesh and Laxmi, we have this Quran also. We put our hands together and say the Gayatri Mantra, which my son says, and I say ‘bismillah’ with him. It makes me feel very emotional, where I’m teaching my children something that I also don’t know very well. I’m not a great follower of religion. I believe in Allah very strongly, but I was never forced by my parents to read the namaz five times a day.”

He added, “to me, it’s very important to have a Diwali in the house, Eid in the house. We do Christmas, we put up the tree. The kids enjoy that the most.”

In an interview with the Indian Express, SRK once said, that he instilled the good habits in his children. He said ” I teach my 21-year-old son that it’s not okay to be disrespectful towards a person not beating, not the stuff that #MeToo came out, but basic respect.  I’ve been married for 30 years I’ve never looked into my wife’s purse. I still knock on the bedroom door if she’s changing; I knock on my daughter’s bedroom door. They know it’s me, but this is their space.”

He further added, “Three essential things in relationships: respect, respect, and respect. I firmly believe that romance and love can’t thrive without it. To me, respect equals equality – not the hashtag kind, but genuine mutual understanding. It’s about recognizing vulnerabilities and asking for support. I’ve practiced this with my wife and close female friends, because true love requires it.”
