Noted Odia singer Rakhal Chandra Mohanty passes away

Cuttack: Veteran Odissi vocalist and composer Rakhal Chandra Mohanty passed away at the age of 88 due to old age-related ailments on Sunday.

The noted musician, who was born in 1932 in Pattamundai of Kendrapara district, breathed his last at his residence in Badambadi are of the Silver City this afternoon.

Mohanty had learnt music from Akashvani Kendra, Cuttack. Legendary singers like Balakrushna Das and Pandit Bhubaneswar were some of his teachers. Mishra later started his career as a music teacher.

The celebrated singer had joined the All India Radio in 1974 as a music composer and created many popular and acclaimed musical programmes during his 20 years association with the AIR.

He shot to fame by giving music to many Odia films. He has composed music for films like Ghara Sansar, Amar Prem, Trinath Mela and Akhaya Truriya to name a few.

For his contribution to the field of music, he was honoured with the Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrishna Das Memorial Award for in 2017. He is also the recipient of the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

The Ollywood film and music industry expressed deep condolences on the sad demise of Rakhal Chandra.
