Feeling drained and fatigued is becoming an everyday problem for many women. Juggling life at work, responsibilities at home, academic life and family duties, constant tiredness is an almost inevitable feeling.

However, according to many doctors, chronic fatigue may not just be a consequence of your busy schedule, it may be the first sign of an iron deficiency.

Iron is a mineral that is used to build healthy red blood cells within the body.

Women are prone to developing an iron deficiency because of the loss of blood during menstruation each month, this can be exacerbated with heavy periods.

Pregnancy also increases iron deficiency as an additional supply is needed to nurture the growing baby.

Other common symptoms that may occur when you have an iron deficiency:

  • Frequent headaches and dizziness
  • Pale skin
  • Hair loss

Many of the causes and symptoms of iron deficiency can be prevented by consuming a healthy diet rich in spinach, leafy vegetables, lentils, beans, eggs, meat and nuts. Including Vitamin C rich foods like oranges and guavas along with such foods helps absorption. Health experts have also advised for regular testing, especially women with a medical history of heavy periods and pregnant women.
