Shelby Martin, a first-time mother from Nashville, Tennessee recently went viral after giving birth to her son, Cassian, who weighed an astonishing 12 pound and 14 ounces (5.8 kg).

His birth set a new record at TriStar Centennial Women’s Hospital and quickly went viral online with thousands of people reacting in disbelief and humour.

Cassian’s weight is well above the U.S. average of about 7 pounds for newborns. Due to his large size, Shelby delivered him via C-section which is a common procedure for babies over 10 pounds to reduce risks such as prolonged labour, shoulder dystocia and perineal tears.

After birth, Cassian reportedly spent a short time in the NICU for monitoring, receiving IV fluids, oxygen and glucose checks to ensure he was healthy and stable.

She shared tips for coping with cravings, physical strain and the emotional ups and downs of late-stage pregnancy. One of her videos, in which she said, “When people talk about having a big baby… trust me, I know big,” quickly went viral, garnering over 4.4 million likes and thousands of comments.

Babies born with exceptionally high birth weights are often called macrosomic or “jumbo” babies—require careful monitoring and specialized medical support.
