Tamil Nadu Collector sends her daughter to Anganwadi Centre, wins hearts

Tirunelveli: The District Collector here in Tamil Nadu has set example for others by sending her daughter to local Angawanwadi centre instead of a fancy play school in the city.

A 2009 batch IAS officer, Shilpa Prabhakar Satish is the first woman Collector of this district and bats for anganwadis, saying they are “integrated child development areas” that keep track of the children’s health.

“Anganwadi centres have all the facilities and a holistic environment which is good for the growth of a child,” the District Magistrate said expressing happiness at her decision.

Another reason behind her decision may have been her feeling that the general attitude towards Anganwadi centres should change, she added.

The anganwadi teachers in the district are provided with smartphones with an app which would be used to record the height and weight of the children and help maintain their health record.

In course of time, the health details would be handed over to schools where the children go to study. This effort was part of the National Nutritious Mission, she told.
