  1. Maoists torch vehicles, put up banner at country liquor factory in Koraput

Suspected members of outlawed CPI (Maoist) group set at least three vehicles to fire and put up a banner at a liquor production unit in Pottangi area of Koraput district on Friday night.

Issuing warning to close down the liquor unit immediately they torched a four-wheeler and two bikes parked inside it.

Before leaving the spot they hung a red banner with messages written in white ink to the main gate of the unit premise. However, the banner didn’t bear the name of any Maoist Committee or signatory.

  1. Malaysian cargo ship stranded on Odisha coast after technical glitch

A Malaysian cargo ship en-route to Vishakhapatnam anchored off the Odisha coast near Khirisahi under Krushnaprasad block of Puri district following a technical glitch for last two days.

The ship with a total10 crew members including nine Malaysian and one Indian citizen was veered off its sea route towards the coast due to disturbed sea, say reports.

The incident came to light after some locals spotted the ship near the Chilika river mouth and tried to communicate with the crew members out of curiosity but failed in their attempt due to the language barrier

  1. Hirakud to release season’s first flood water on August 14

To tackle the situation arising out of the increasing water level in the reservoir, the Hirakud dam authorities have decided to open its sluice gates starting from August 14.

The move aimed at releasing the first flood water of the season will be carried out at 11 am on the same day, informed Chief Engineer of the dam Sunil Nayak.

  1. Odia freedom fighter Dayanidhi Nayak passes away at 95

Veteran freedom fighter from Odisha Dayanidhi Nayak passed away on Saturday following old age-related ailments. He was 95.

Nayak breathed his last at around 7.30 am yesterday after remaining admitted to a private hospital in Bargarh for past one month.

The late freedom fighter is survived by his daughter Swarupa Nayak.

  1. Kandhamal MP Achyuta Samanta visits constituency

Kandhamal Lok Sabha MP Achyuta Samanta is on a one day visit to the constituency on Saturday. After reaching Baliguda he was welcomed by BJD party workers.

Later Dr Samanta took part in a meeting presided by Baliguda BJD block president Tuna Dash. Different acute issues related to Baliguda block were discussed in the meeting.

Baliguda MLA Chakramani Kanhar, NAC President Mamata Behera and cadres as well as workers of BJD took part in the meeting.

  1. National Conference Moves SC Over Article 370 Abrogation

National Conference MPs Mohammed Akbar Lone and  Hasnain Masoodi on Saturday moved the Supreme Court challenging the scrapping of provisions of Article 370, which conferred special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The petitioners described the abrogation of sections of Article 370 as an “illegal” decision by the government and sought directions from the apex court to declare the presidential order unconstitutional.

  1. Former PM Manmohan Singh to file nomination for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

Former Prime Minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh will file nomination for the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

The veteran Congress leader will file his nomination on August 13.

  1. Sonia Gandhi named Congress Party’s President

Sonia Gandhi will again head the Congress party as an interim measure. She had stepped down as Congress party President in December 2017.

Sonia Gandhi’s name was announced at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.
