Indian Railways issues new baggage norms, Unlimited luggage not allowed

Indian Railways have issued new baggage norms, which will now forbid passengers from carrying unlimited luggage during their train journeys.

After coming up with several initiatives and decisions to increase passengers’s travel experience, the Indian Railways has now issued an advisory asking people not to carry ‘extra luggage.’ The Ministry of Railways took to their official Twitter handle to announce the notice issued. The post read, “Too much luggage leads to the joy of train ride being halved. Do not carry excess luggage while travelling by train. In case you have excess baggage, go to the parcel office and book the luggage.”

Every individual passenger is allowed to carry a certain weight of luggage while travelling via trains. The allotted margin differs from compartments of one class to other.

AC First Class: Free allowance: 70 kg

Marginal allowance: 15 kg

Maximum quantity permitted ( including free allowance): 150 kg

AC 2-Tier sleeper/First class:

Free allowance: 50 kg

Marginal allowance: 10 kg

Maximum quantity permitted (including free allowance): 100 kg

AC 3-Tier sleeper/AC Chair car:

Free allowance: 40 kg

Marginal allowance: 10 kg

Maximum quantity permitted (including free allowance): 40 kg

Sleeper class:

Free allowance: 40 kg

Marginal allowance: 10 kg

Maximum quantity permitted (including free allowance): 80 kg

Second class:

Free allowance: 35 kg

Marginal allowance: 10 kg

Maximum quantity permitted (including free allowance): 70 kg

Passengers are allowed to book in advance for carrying luggage beyond the free allowance allotted to the compartment by paying a of charge at 1.5 times of luggage rate.
