Giant! Bigger than Empire State Building Asteroid Heading Towards Earth

Space scientists of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has warned that a huge asteroid is heading towards the earth. The organisation is frequently monitoring the movement of the space rock, and it has named it Asteroid 388945 (2008 TZ3). According to the information gathered by now, the asteroid is supposed to make close approach to our planet at 2.48 am on May 16.

NASA further stated that the asteroid is 1,608 feet wide, which is bigger than New York’s iconic Empire State building (1,454 feet in height).

Asteroid 388945 can cause huge damage if it hits the planet. But, the space scientists’ calculation says that the space rock will pass by Earth from a distance of about 2.5 million miles away. Although it sounds like a huge distance, it is not in space terms. Therefore, NASA has termed it as “close approach”.

Reportedly, this is not the first time Asteroid 388945 is paying a visit to our planet. On May 2020, the huge rock passed very close to Earth at a distance of 1.7 million miles. According to the space scientists, this space rock routinely passes the Earth – every two years – while orbiting the Sun.

Apparently, the next time this asteroid will pass close to Earth in May 2024. However, that time it will be 6.9 million miles farther. The asteroid will again come as close as this time in May 2163.
