Fierce solar storm to pass through Earth on 7 May; Impact on the planet revealed

On May 7, 2022, the world might witness minor radio blackouts. The same may be due to a weak solar storm which is likely to pass through Earth, as reported by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

According to reports, the Sun has been witnessing heightened activity for quite some time now, which is leading to such incidents. The Sun is currently emitting powerful solar flares and giant explosions of plasma which are collectively termed as Coronal Mass Ejections (CME).

When these ejections pass through Earth, they cause temporary compression on the planet’s magnetic shield, thereby causing ‘geomagnetic storm’. These carry the capacity to disturb radio waves, damage satellites and also take down power grids.

According to NOAA, most of the geomagnetic storms are mild by formation but the large ones can cause severe damage.
