The clips and photographs went viral over Weibo and Sina, China’s Twitter-like platforms crossing 150 million views. Some users on Douyin, China’s own version of TikTok, termed this phenomena as a ‘bad omen’ because of China’s way of handling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Social media saw comments like, “I have never seen anything like this before. It really amazes me that the sky can even turn red”.

As panic among people did not curb down, television and other media outlets started explaining that the crimson sky was a result of light refraction. In a statement, Zhoushan Meteorological Bureau explained, “When weather conditions are good, more water in the atmosphere forms aerosols which refract and scatter the light of fishing boats and create the red sky seen by the public.”

The city’s local media also reported that the red sky might have been a result of refraction of the red light coming from a fishing boat harvesting Pacific Saury.

When people began comparing the incident to an event back in 1770 where the sky had turned red for nine long days because of a massive solar activity, an expert from the Space Physics Research team of China University of Geosciences in Wuhan clarified that both the events were completely independent of each other.
