Can Fungi On Onions Infect You With Black Fungus, Know The Facts Here

At a time when Covid-19 Pandemic has heavily impacted India, cases of black fungus or mucormycosis is also on the rise in various States.

However, bulk of the population in the country is not yet aware of the mucormycosis. This has resulted in the spreading of misinformation among the public through internet. Among many fake articles spreading across the social media some have also pointed out about the presence of black fungus in the kitchen of common households.

Articles have also claimed that onions can be the carrier of Black fungus. According to the above mentioned fake articles, a black layer formed on onions can cause mucormycosis (black fungus).

However, when the authenticity of the posts was checked by authenticated national medias, they turned out to be false.

According to experts, the fungi present on onions or inside the refrigerator is caused by bacteria and yeast. The fungi have very minimum chances of affecting your health. However, the fungi/ black mold cannot lead to Mucormycosis.

As per a report of PIB, AIIMS- Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria had clarified that labelling the same fungus with names of different colour could create confusion among people.

Mucormycosis is not communicable disease and unlike Covid-19, majority (90-95%) of the patients getting infected with it were found to be either diabetic or are on steroids, said Guleria.
