World Vegan Day: Promoting Veganism & Vegan Diet

Bhubaneswar: Observed annually on November 1 across the globe, ‘World Vegan Day’ aims to highlight the benefits of veganism for human beings, animals as well as the environment. First observed in the year 1994 to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK Vegan Society, World Vegan Day is celebrated through exhibitions, seminars, public debates, workshops in order to promote veganism and inform people about its relative benefits on a whole. In many countries, the month of November is celebrated as ‘Vegan Month.’

For starters, Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in terms of food. The term ‘Vegan’ was first coined by Donald Watson and has been derived from the word ‘Vegetarian.’ During initial period, it symbolised refrainment from dairy products but later extended to eggs. By 1951, Veganism had take the shape of a movement against exploitation and killing of animals for food.

A vegan avoids the use of dairy products, eggs, meat, honey and other food items directly or indirectly derived from animals. These days, a lot of people are turning to veganism for multifarious reasons- environmental impact, animal cruelty, health concerns and weight loss.

Vegans are more inclined towards the consumption of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, protein-packed legumes and beans, hearty whole grains, and healthy fats like olive oil. The basic idea is to cut out certain processed options and make the diet lower in sugar, saturated fats and sodium.

Veganism aims to prevent cruelty to animals and foster better health and eco-friendly lifestyle with zero harm to living creatures. It also aims to promote the benefits of veganism and a vegan diet.

World Vegan Day is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who wants to adopt a vegan lifestyle. There are various events organised on this day, participating in which, people can learn about veganism and motivated to turn vegans themselves.

Besides, it is also a perfect opportunity for those who are well-aware of the benefits of veganism and wish to sensitize and inform others regarding the concept and its advantages.
