World Heart Day: 5 Simple Tips For A Healthy Heart

Bhubaneswar: Celebrated annually on September 29, ‘World Heart Day’ is observed to spread awareness about heart issues and health of heart. It focuses on heart healthy environments and making better heart choices across the globe in order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and heart-related ailments. The observance of September 29 as World Heart Day started in the year 2000 in order to inform people and make them realise how important it is to take care of heart which is the lifeline of human body.

At present, a huge percentage of world population is suffering from various cardiovascular ailments like heart attack, heart failure and stroke. A survey by World Heart Federation revealed that heart problems are the reason behind majority of pre-mature deaths. It was also revealed that at least 80% of the premature deaths due to heart diseases can be protected by simple lifestyle changes, which every individual can bring about in his life.

In support of this day, we have come up with a few simple tips for a healthy and a fit heart.

Work Out And Exercise-

On an average, one should work out for 30 Minutes four times a week. It has been proven that those who exercise vigorously for 2 or more hours cumulatively per week have 60 percent less risk of heart attack than those who do not.

Increase Water Intake-

One should drink 4-5 litres of water per day on an average. Water dilutes the blood and prevents clotting. Studies have revealed that men with good water intake are 54 percent less likely to have a fatal heart attack or heart ailments.

Switch to Green Tea-

A recent study has revealed that people who drink green tea have half the risk of heart attack compared to those who drink black tea or coffee. Green tea contains potent antioxidants called flavonoids that provide a protective cover to heart and prevents cardiovascular problems. Besides, Green tea lower high cholesterol and aid in cancer prevention.

Say No To Smoking And Alcohol-

Smokers and those addicted to cigarettes face a 92 percent increased risk of heart attack. Smoking also affects cholesterol levels and increases the blood’s tendency to clot. Also, regular intake of alcohol in excessive quantity is linked to serious health issues, including heart diseases. Thus, if you want a healthy heart, it is time to limit your intake of alcohol.

Control your Salt Intake-

An average adult should eat less than 6gm of salt a day in total, which is about one teaspoon. Keeping a check on your salt intake will also help you maintain a healthy blood pressure level besides a good heart.
