Bhubaneswar: To mark the foundation day of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, 16th October is celebrated as World Food Day across the globe. The World Food Day (WFD) was recognized by FAO’s Member Countries at the 20th General Conference of the Organization’s in November 1979.

The idea of World Food Day was a brainchild of Dr. Pal Romany, the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture who proposed this at the 20th Session of the FAO Conference. Since then, this day has been habitually observed in more than 150 countries worldwide to raise different issues pertaining to eradication of hunger and poverty.

The main aim of World Food Day is to promote food security and eradication of hunger across nations and societies. Every year, this day has a different theme. World Food Day 2018 will mark the 73rd anniversary of FAO’s founding. This year, the call is to achieve Zero Hunger globally by the year 2030.

According to reports, world hunger is on the rise again. FAO figures reveal that over 815 million people are suffering chronic undernourishment at present. Conflict, War, Extreme weather, Climatic change, economic slowdown and decreasing agricultural production are the biggest hurdle in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.

However, the mission of Zero Hunger can be accomplished if we join hands across nations, continents, sectors and professions, and act towards it. Zero Hunger moves beyond conflict-resolution and economic growth, taking the long-term approach to build peaceful, inclusive societies.
