World Environment Day is being celebrated today in Odisha

The theme for 2019 is “Air pollution”

 Bhubaneswar: World Environment Day is observed on 5 June every year across the globe for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. After its commencement in 1974 today the Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries.

World Environment Day is the “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth. Every year, the Day is organized around a theme in order to draw attention towards pressing environmental issues which focuses attention on a particular environmental concern. The theme for 2019 is “Air pollution”.

Last year India was the host country while this time China will do the honours. The grand event on the Day is being organised at Hangzhou, in the province of Zhejiang.

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeated his commitment to ensure a cleaner planet and said that living in harmony with nature will lead to a better future.


“Our planet and environment is something we all cherish greatly. Today, on World Environment Day, we reiterate our commitment to ensure a cleaner planet. Living in harmony with nature will lead to a better future,” Modi tweeted.

He also posted a video in his twitter handle appreciating the nature with a message.

Similarly, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took on to Twitter and urged collective action for the restoration of greenery.


“On World Environment Day, urge collective action towards afforestation to restore greenery in Odisha in aftermath of Cyclone Fani,” he tweeted.

Odisha’s industrial port city Paradip also observed the Day.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Delhi has also joined hands with Odisha government to ring in the World Environment Day with concrete action. Yesterday the “Comprehensive Action Plan for Clean Air for Six Non-attainment Cities of Odisha” — Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela, Talcher, Angul, and Balasore was launched.

In a high-level National Orientation Conclave on Air Quality Management: Building Strategies for Clean Air, held in Bhubaneswar, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi, flagged off the process of implementation of the plans.

Similarly, in Puri, renowned sand artist Manas Sahoo has created a sand art theme based on World Environment Day 2019 with the message “LET’S SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT TOGETHER.”

World Environment Day was also celebrated in Kandhamal. On this occasion, the newly elected Member of Parliament and Founder of KIIT & KISS Dr. Achyuta Samanta addressed a gathering in Phulbani and asked each one to plant one tree. He also urged everyone to take care of the environment for a healthy life. About two hundred youths took part in this event and distributed one thousand saplings to encourage afforestation.
