Bhubaneswar: Today is World Diabetes Day. Every year November 14 is observed as the World Diabetes Day (WDD). It was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. WDD became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. It is marked every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

WDD is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries including India. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight.

The World Diabetes Day campaign aims to:

Be the platform to promote IDF advocacy efforts throughout the year.

Be the global driver to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue.

The campaign is represented by a blue circle logo that was adopted in 2007 after the passage of the UN Resolution on diabetes. The blue circle is the global symbol for diabetes awareness. It signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes epidemic.

Every year, the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that runs for one or more years. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018-19 is Family and Diabetes.

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day Kalinga TV (Web) chatted with young Yoga Guru Ganesh Gochhikar. A native of Puri he is based in Indonesia. So far he has lived in at least five countries to provide yoga training. Interestingly, many disease can be cured through yoga. We interacted with Ganesh Guru ji to know about cure of Diabetes.

Ganesh says, “Diabetes is a lifestyle related condition due to an imbalance in handling a glucose load and is not a disease. it is one of the several life style related chronic conditions with an end result of complications that are related to early aging changes resulting in blockage of small and large arteries.”

Two types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 (IDDM)
  2. Type 2 (NIDDM)

A: Type 1 diabetes is where our body does not produces the insulin. So that it called INSULIN DEPENDENT. This disease where 5 % people are affected.

B: Type 2 diabetes called as a diabetes mellitus Or NON INSULIN DEPENDENT and hence this condition is also commonly referred to as sugar disease. The defect of this condition is that either your pancreas does not produce enough insulin or it produces sufficient insulin but the cells of your body are unable to use the insulin properly. This disease where 95% people are affected.

Asked how yoga helps to keep Diabetes away Ganesh said, “Regular practice of yoga characterized by deep relaxation to body, slowing down the breath and calming down the mind, and improving the steadiness and will power to manage their diabetes.”
