New Delhi: The Supreme Court’s new Lady Justice statue has gone through a big change, the new Lady Justice statue has shed its blindfold. It’s no longer wearing a blindfold. The Lady Justice now holds the Constitution. Previously the lady was seen holding a sword. Also the new Lady Justice statue has open eyes, showing that the law isn’t blind, it sees and understands everything.

The old symbolism was used to convey the message that, justice is blind to difference between Social status, wealth, religion and background. It treats everyone equally and makes decisions based solely on the law. Now the statue’s new look represents a shift towards a more modern understanding of justice. The new statue without blindfold states that, justice sees and considers all perspectives. It is about understanding and fairness, not just equality.

Previously, the lady of justice was typically considered as a woman with a blindfold, holding scales and a sword. The blindfold meant everyone is equal under the law. It showed that justice should be fair and unbiased. The scale which the old justice lady used to hold, represented as the symbol of  balance and fairness, while the sword was meant to represent the power of the law. The new lady justice statue is now a symbol of a modern India where the law is fair and sees everyone equally.

Reportedly this shift happened under the leadership of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who’s been driving reforms to make the justice system more accessible and transparent.
