Patiala: They are not different from the common men. They drive taxis to earn their daily bread. However, they do something extraordinary for which they are considered ‘Good Samaritans’ sent by God. Around 400 taxi drivers are eager to extend their helping hands to people in distress. They arrive on the spot after getting information from anyone who needs their help.
Punjab Taxi Union has a special WhatsApp number for the purpose. Any of the members of the association rushes to the spot to help the people after getting information through the WhatsApp number and helps the needy person as per his capacity. They take the injured persons, who sustain injuries due to accident, to the hospital and donate blood if needed. That apart, they also provide different other kinds of services to the needy.
Sohan Singh Nava, the district president of the union intimated that committees have been formed both in the district-level and block-level in all the 22 districts of the state. While there are 11 members in a district-level committee, each block-level committee has five members.
Influenced by their good works, some taxi drivers from Haryana, some NGOs and even some government officials have joined them now, Singh added.
