Preparations afoot for West Bengal Ganga Sagar Mela

While there is only four days left for the famous Ganga Sagar Mela of West Bengal preparations for it is going on in full swing. The large fair will be held this year on January 15 on the Makar Sankranti day when scores of devotees will take a holy dip in river Ganga at the Sagar Island of West Bengal. Notably, unlike other years, in 2020 Makar Sankranti will be observed on January 15 and not in January 14.

Ganga Sagar Mela is organized at Gangasagar sub-division of South Pargana district in West Bengal. Regarded as an auspicious day for taking a holy dip in the Ganges, huge number of devotees, tourists and saints flock to the South Pargana district on this day. Even we witness foreigners taking interest to participate in this holy festival of Hindus.

On the Makar Sankranti day devotees visit the venue to take a holy dip in river Ganga. Later, they offer prayers at the Kapila Muni temple, which is situated at Sagar Island of West Bengal.

As per reports, this year the Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government has made arrangements for air ambulance during Ganga Sagar Mela. Along with that the pilgrims will be given bar-coded strips so that the authorities can track them if they need help.

On the occasion of Ganga Sagar Mela pilgrims perform a number of rituals, lit lamps and chant verses to appease river Ganga (Goddess) around Sagardwip in West Bengal.
