Mohan Charan Majhi: From Saraswati Vidya Mandir teacher to first BJP Odisha CM

Keonjhar: Mohan Charan Majhi, BJP’s MLA from Keonjhar Sadar ST seat will be the next Chief Minister of Odisha. He will be the first BJP Chief Minister of the State while the Bharatiya Janata Party is going to form the state government for the first time in Odisha.

Majhi’s name was announced as the next CM of Odisha on Tuesday. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the name in Bhubaneswar. Also, names of Pravati Parida and KV Singhdeo were announced to become the Deputy CMs of Odisha in the maiden BJP Odisha Government.

Ahead of the elections in Odisha, many central leaders including the Prime Minister and Home Minister came to Odisha for campaigning. Then, it was assured that this time an Odia youth or a young woman and even a tribal person will be the Chief Minister of Odisha.

The journey of Mohan Charan Majhi from a teacher (Acharya) at the Saraswati Vidya Mandir to the new Chief Minister of Odisha is much inspiring. He is from the RSS background. Besides, he is a strong Tribal leader.

Mohan Charan Majhi was a teacher of Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir, Jhumpura in Keonjhar district and a four time MLA of Keonjhar Sadar AC since 2000.

MLA of Keonjhar, Mohan Charan Majhi has contested six times and has become MLA four times. Even Mohan has been the leader of the opposition party in the assembly and has held important responsibilities such as the chairman of the standing committee of the assembly and the public accounts committee.

Mohan Majhi, a well-known name across the state as a prominent Tribal leader of Odisha, has become a popular leader in Odisha by repeatedly attacking the government through questions in the assembly.

Personal information

Mohan Charan Majhi was born on January 6, 1972 in a poor family of Raikala village of Keonjhar Sadar Constituency in Odisha. His father Gunaram Majhi worked as a peon in the village school.

Mohan’s mother passed away when he was young. Among his brothers and sisters, his younger brother also died within a few months.

According to Mohan’s family, he grew up in poverty and struggle. He started his education from the village school and later passed matriculation from Jhumpura High School in 1987. He passed +2 from Anandpur College in 1990. Later, he passed +3 from Chandrashekhar College, Champua in 1993. He completed LL. B. from Dhenkanal Law College in 2011.

Political career of Mohan Majhi

Mohan Majhi initiated his political career in 1992 as a Samiti Sabhya of Keonjhar Sadar Block. He contested for the Samiti Sabhya of Raikala Panchayat and got defeated.

Then he worked as a teacher at the Saraswati Vidya Mandir School in Jhumpura. Later, in 1997 he was elected as the Sarpanch of Raikala Panchayat.

Then Majhi contested as MLA from BJP-BJD coalition in year 2000 and won. He defeated Jagdish Naik of Congress. Mohan Majhi got 54449 (59.8%) votes, while Jagdish Naik of Congress got 29286 (33.63%) votes. Hence, Mohan Majhi won by 2263 votes.

In 2004, Mohan Majhi was elected as a BJP MLA from Keonjhar Constituency. He got 41146 votes, while Madhav Sardar of Congress got 35144 votes and Majhi won by 602 votes. He also became the Deputy Chief whip in this government.

In 2009 Mohan Majhi contested for the third time after the BJP and BJD split, in which Mohan Majhi got 29 202 (24%) votes while the BJD candidate Subarna Naik got 36471 (30.34%) votes, in which Mohan was defeated by 7269 votes.

In 2014 also Mohan Majhi was defeated as a MLA. Mohan Majhi got 47,283 (30.31%) votes while BJD candidate Abhiram Naik got 55,959 (35.87) votes. In this election, Mohan Majhi was defeated by 8676 votes.

In 2019, Mohan Majhi contested the election for the fifth time against BJD heavyweight leader Madhav Sardar, in which Mohan Majhi got 72,760 (42.10%) votes and Madhav Sardar got 71,636 (41.45%) votes. Accordingly, Mohan Majhi won by 1124 votes.

In the recent 2024 election, Mohan Majhi contested as a MLA for the sixth time and fought against BJD’s Meena Majhi. In this election Mohan Majhi got 87,815 (47.05%) votes while BJD’s Meena Majhi got 76,238 (40.84%) votes. Mohan Majhi won by 11,904 votes.
