Malkangiri Airport’s construction incomplete, operations stalled, watch
Malkangiri resident’s long-standing dream for an Airport is yet to come true because the ongoing work of the upcoming Airport is yet to be completed
Malkangiri: Flights will take off from Malkangiri district. People’s long-standing dreams will be fulfilled. The district will develop in the economic, tourism and trade sectors. With this hope, an airport was built here in Malkangiri. But nothing was gained. After a year, everything was turned upside down. The airport construction work is in the same condition as it was. People’s hopes remained in dreams.
While the airport runway work is completed, the work of the terminal and passenger lounge has also been completed. The trial run on the runway has also been done.
The airport is under construction in Katliguda, on the outskirts of Malkangiri town. The runway is now awaiting the landing of aircraft in Malkangiri.
But practical condition is discouraging. Due to the lack of security, miscreants have entered the airport premises many times, vandalized the terminal glass doors and stole many things.
No fire department building has been built here yet for fire safety for safe landing of the aircraft. There is no special electrical system. There is no ticket counter. The boundary wall around the area is collapsing.
The work is lying in the same stage that the previous government had done. The then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Malkangiri Airport. All these have remained a dream for the residents of Malkangiri.
It is said that there was no DGCA permission for the said airport. If so, the question arises, how did the aircraft fly?
A few days after the inauguration, various parts of the wall collapsed.
Malkangiri Airport now does not have an air traffic control system. There is no security or fire safety system.
The runway of Malkangiri Airport is 1620 meters long and 30 meters wide. It is reported that it can be expanded to 3,000 meters or 3 kilometers if necessary. Malkangiri Airport has a runway that can handle 16 or 30-seater aircraft.
The estimated cost of the airport in the first phase was Rs 70 crore. After Jaipur, Utakela, Rourkela and Rangeilunda, Malkangiri district was included in the aviation map.
Built on 234 acres of land in just 14 months, the runway of this airport is 1620 meters long and 30 meters wide. It was expected that passenger aircraft would soon fly to this airport.
Similarly, the length of the airport is 3,000 meters and the width is 315 meters. This work, which started on November 1, 2022, was completed in just 14 months. There is also a huge parking system along with the terminal, guest house. The airport has been built on a total of 234 acres of land. 74 acres of government land, 33 acres of forest land and 126 acres of private land have been acquired for this. The land was acquired for a sum of Rs 29 crore. 55 displaced families have been provided with pucca houses. Malkangiri MLA Narasingh Madkami said that the current state government is trying to resolve the problems and provide air services.
It will take another year to complete the airport. The government is trying to provide air services to the people of the district, said the Nabarangpur MP.
