Human Rights Day 2018: Stand Up For Human Rights

0

Observed every year on December 10, Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations (UN) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the most translated document in the world– available in more than 500 languages. It sets out a certain set of rights that are the basic and minimum set of human rights for all citizens.

Human Rights Day aims to commemorate, educate and reflect on the principles that form the UDHR means celebrating the rights we exercise every day as human beings and acknowledging that enjoying those rights carries with it the responsibility of promoting these rights for all people, irrespective of all distinctions and differences.

Certain things that many of us take for granted – such as the right to an education, the right to receive medical care, and the freedom to practice our chosen religion – are not equally available to people in all parts of the world.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the document which declared inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth or another status.

Stand Up for Human Rights is the theme this year and the UN gives us six points to remember-

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights empowers us all.
  • Human rights are relevant to all of us, every day.
  • Our shared humanity is rooted in these universal values.
  • Equality, justice, and freedom prevent violence and sustain peace.
  • Whenever and wherever humanity’s values are abandoned, we all are at greater risk.
  • We need to stand up for our rights and those of others.

Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on this day to raise awareness and infuse the importance of human rights in the minds of the people. Many individuals and communities will be commemorating and celebrating December 10, and pledging a commitment to maintain and improve people’s human rights wherever possible. We need to stand up for our own rights and those of others– the principles enshrined in UDHR are as relevant today as were in 1948.
