Health: Simple Tips For Curing Back Ache

Bhubaneswar: Back pain is one of the reasons for absence from work and for seeking medical treatment. Resulting from injury, strain, physical activity or medical conditions, back pain or back ache can be uncomfortable and debilitating. It affects people of every age and as one gets older, the chances of developing excruciating lower back pain increases.

The human back is composed of a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, tendons, disks, and bones which work together to support the body and help us move around. Problems with any of these components can lead to back pain.

Pain in the upper back may be caused due to disorders of the aorta, tumours in the chest or spine inflammation. Lower back pain may be attributed to the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, lower back muscles, abdominal and pelvic internal organs, and the skin around the lumbar area.

A good, regular massage does not only cure backache but also works as a stress buster. Ayurvedic oils, ointment and massage gels can be used for getting relief from excruciating back pain.

Ice is a wonderful pain reliever. An ice pack wrapped in a towel can reduce pain as well as swelling.

  • Exercise:

Physical exercise is effective in preventing backache. It helps in keeping the back muscles in good condition. Stretching exercises as well as back and abdominal exercises daily will keep back pain at bay.

  • Epsom Salt Bath:

A lukewarm water bath with epsom bath salts can help you reduce backache. However, one needs to be careful that the water is not too warm and just lukewarm.

  • Sitting in correct posture:

As most of us spend a major portion of our day sitting, it is important to maintain the correct posture. Sitting properly can reduce the amount of strain on the back. Correct posture means having all the bones lined up neatly and your feet flat on the floor. Besides, one should also focus on sleeping in correct posture.

  • Turmeric and Honey milk:

A glass of milk with turmeric and honey is traditional cure for backache. This concoction also relieves body and joint pains.

  • Garlic:

Eating 2-3 cloves of garlic every morning on empty stomach and massaging the back with heated coconut or mustard oil containing garlic is a proven cure for back pain. Back massage with garlic oil works wonders for back ache.
