Bhubaneswar: Today is Akshaya Tritiya. This Hindu festival is observed on the 3rd day (Tritiya Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaisakha. In 2019 it is being celebrated on May 7. However, as cyclone Fani has lately (on May 3) wretched havoc in the coastal belt hugely affecting districts like Puri, Khurda and Cuttack, the fervour of the festival is almost invisible in this belt.
Buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is considered auspicious. However, this year, at a time when people of the capital city are distressed due to cash crunch and absence of online purchasing facilities due to the cyclone, no one thinks about purchasing the yellow metal.
The word ‘Akshaya’ means eternal in Sanskrit and ‘Tritiya’ means ‘third.’ That means among the Tritiya the one that falls on the Sukla paksha of the Baisakh month is considered eternal. And hence commencing of any venture on this day is considered august and high earning.
Akshaya Tritiya is associated with many legends. As per a legend Lord Parshuram was born on this day. Another legend says Ved Vyasa began reciting the Hindu epic Mahabharata to Ganesh on Akshaya Tritiya.
In Odisha, construction of the chariots for the famous Rath Yatra of Puri begins on this day. As per the tradition, the temple servitors would perform a special ritual at the Rath Khala (chariot making yard). They bring the Angya Mala which can be seen as an authorization of the Lord in a ceremonial procession to be put on three pieces of woods (from which the three chariots are being erected). The chief carpenters of the three chariots would touch the gold axe on the three wooden logs symbolising the beginning of the constructing process of the chariots.
Besides, Akshaya Tritiya is considered as the day when Lord Balabhadra had married Rebati.
Another important feature of Akshaya Tritiya is that on this day you can commence a business or enter a new house without consulting an astrologer that whether that muhurta (auspicious time) is good to your horoscope or not.
