Veteran actor Achyut Potdar passes away at 91, leaving behind a legacy of iconic roles in films and television shows.
Achyut Potdar, the veteran actor who is largely remembered for his portrayal of a strict professor in the hugely successful 3 Idiots, died at the age of 91 on August 18, 2025. He passed away at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he was admitted for health-related reasons. There has been no information shared about the reason of his death.
Potdar’s career spanned a 40 long year period and he had acted over 125 films, plus a number of TV series to his credit. He appeared in classic, award-winning films such as Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Similarly, he found success on television with serials like Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, and Bharat Ki Khoj.
Prior to entering the field of acting, Potdar was in the Indian Armed Forces and subsequently employed by the Indian Oil Company. His interest in acting inspired him to join films and television in the 1980s. Potdar’s ability to switch between stage, television, and film with such ease earned him respect within the industry.
His role of the stern but lovable engineering professor in 3 Idiots became iconic, with his line “kya baat hai” still commonly used in memes and social media. The news of his death has caused a national outpouring of shock and grief, as fans and colleagues remembered him as being humble and committed to his craft.
