Mumbai: After unveiling the statue of filmmaker Yash Chopra in 2016, the government of Switzerland is planning to honour India’s first female superstar Sridevi with a statue. Reportedly, this will be a mark of tribute to the late actress who shot some of her most memorable films in Switzerland, including the 1989 Yash Chopra film ‘Chandni‘.

“Many of Chopra’s films featured Switzerland as a backdrop and he is credited with boosting the popularity of the Alpine nation among Indians tourists. Now, considering Sridevi’s role in promoting tourism here. there is a proposal to honour the actor by having her statue here,” PTI quoted a senior Swiss official saying.

Interestingly, this comes after Sridevi was honoured at the prestigious 71st Cannes International Film Festival in May, for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Later, the ‘Chandni‘ actress was also posthumously awarded the  National Award for Best Actor (Female) for her role in ‘Mom’.

Sridevi’s untimely and tragic demise has sent shockwaves to millions of her fans and stunned the entire film fraternity. The actor had passed away on February 24 in Dubai due to accidental drowning in her hotel bath tub.

Notably, Swiss tourism has received a major boost due to the impact of Indian films. Raj Kapoor’s Sangam was the first film to be shot in Switzerland. Later, other films like An Evening In Paris, Lamhe, Chandni and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge popularised Switzerland among Indian tourists.
