Mumbai: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film Padmavat (earlier Padmavati) is set to hit the screens on January 25, a spokesperson from Viacom18 Motion Pictures, co-producer of the film informed on Monday.

The movie featuring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh will clash with Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman at the box office during the Republic Day weekend.

The film was scheduled to be released on December 1, 2017 but was forced to postpone its releasing date as fringe groups like the Karni Sena protested the movie saying it “distorts history”.

In December, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to provide a U/A certificate to the movie and suggested other modifications.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said that the state govt will not allow the release of Padmavat in the state.

Padmavat is based on lore that 14th century ruler Alauddin Khilji fell madly in love with Padmini, the queen of Chittor. Choosing honour over a life in Delhi, Padmini and the other women of Chittor killed themselves by leaping into a fire – a practice called jauhar.
