Comic Con India founder explains why anime is booming in India
Pandemic, regional language dubbing, and inclusive storylines have made anime part of mainstream culture in India, says Jatin Varma.
Mumbai: Anime’s popularity in India has ballooned in the last couple of years, and Jatin Varma, founder of Comic Con India, thinks the pandemic has been the main driver for this growth.
He said the reach of anime, particularly its move to streaming services and translation into regional languages, allowed it to extend its reach well beyond metros.
He mentioned that there is no longer any age restriction for viewers of anime.
There is a variety of characters and genres that have created this wider audience.
It has permanently become a fixture in the country’s pop culture.
Varma further stated that India has emerged as the second-largest market for the consumption of anime globally.
“Indian fans, generally, show a remarkable degree of loyalty and stick to the anime/manga for years, unlike any average consumer of any entertainment genre,” he noted.
Varma thinks the Indian anime community can be an attractive option for Japanese content creators, with the nation set to become one of the more influential anime markets.
