‘Buxi Jagabandhu’ Selected for BRM International Theatre Festival organized by NSD

Bhubaneswar: Odia play ‘Buxi Jagabandhu’ has been selected for the 20th Bharat Rang Mahotsav International Theatre Festival. The periodic drama showcases legends of the great Odia freedom fighter. ‘Buxi Jagabandhu’ is written by Padma Shri Manoranjan Das and directed by young Odia director Debabrata Pattanayak.

“‘Buxi Jagabandhu’ has been staged several time in Bhubaneswar and has been widely appreciated. The play dwells upon a few episodes that took place in erstwhile Odisha during pre-independence time. It showcases how the legendary freedom fighter locked horn with the British during the freedom struggle,” said director of the play. Jagabandhu was the commander of the forces of the king of Khordha. He is one of the earliest freedom fighters of India. The great Paik Rebellion in 1817 was under his leadership.

Debabrata is a known drama director, actor and writer from Bhubaneswar who has also worked in stage management and light/Sound management. He has around fifty plays to his credit. His popular plays include ‘Sahidonko Salam’, ‘Dhwansa ra Pathe ‘, ‘Jhimiti Khelaru’ and ‘Durghatana Pare’.

Organized by the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM) was established a decade ago to stimulate the growth and development of theatre across the country. Originally a national festival showcasing the work of the most creative theatre workers in India, so far it has evolved to international scope, hosting theatre companies from around the world, and is now the largest theatre festival of Asia. The 20th Bharat Rang Mahotsav will start from 1 February to continue till February 21. While the actual date for stage of ‘Buxi Jagabandhu’ is yet to be scheduled it will be staged between February 1 and 21, 2019.
