New Delhi: Congress leader Hardik Patel on Monday moved the Supreme Court here challenging the Gujarat High Court order rejecting his plea to stay his conviction in the 2015 Vispur rioting case.

Patel moved the Apex court after his plea for stay was rejected by Gujarat High Court last week.

The Patidar leader, who joined the Congress in March 12th, was awarded a two-year prison sentence by a Visnagar court in Mehsana district on July 2018 for rioting and arson in Visnagar town during the Patidar quota stir in 2015.

In August 2018, the high court suspended the sentence but not the conviction.

The Representation of the People Act bars anyone who has been sentenced to two or more years of imprisonment from contesting elections.

The 25-year-old leader had started preparations to contest from Jamnagar on a Congress ticket. However, he is running against time as the last date for filing of nominations is April 4.

Polling for 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat will be held on April 23.
